Sighardt Donabaum

Pino Rot, Sighardt Donabaum, 2017

£21.00 Regular price

One of the many of Sighardt's wines that we import direct. The winery, situated between the steep stone terraces of the Wachau, has been owned by the Donabaum family for the last 336 years, with over 14 generations working in viniculture. This long tradition and solidarity with the region is their driving force to stimulate Austrian viniculture far from profit maximisation and constraints with a focus on quality and meaningful wines. This takes time. All their wines are aged slowly on natural fine lees and after 6-24 months of ageing are filled up into barrels or stainless steel tanks. This creates authentic wines full of character, which reflect the soul of their terroir.

The Pinot Rot is a fairly classic Austrian field blend led by Pinot Noir. Due to the cooler climate, lighter varieties that need less heat and sun grow a lot more consistently and so the wines are typically quite light in style. That said 2017 was a relatively warm vintage and that heat definitely shines through in the wine you have in the glass. There is still the signature crunchy red fruits, berries and great peppery notes (that allow this to pair really well with charcuterie as well as cheeses) but there is a depth and weight to the wine that wasn’t present in recent previous vintages.
